Laser Safety for Operating Room Personnel

Purpose of the Seminar

This seminar is designed specifically for personnel who are going to be involved with lasers and laser care. Expect a solid introduction to the safety requirements associated with laser uses. Content emphasis is placed on problem solving in areas of the LSO, RN's and technician's to include outside source responsibilities if applicable.

This program provides a conceptual foundation of theory pertaining to the fundamentals of laser nursing. This will include a review of the basic operational characteristics of surgical lasers and applications

Other topics include implementation of the ANSI-Z-136.3 Standard for the Safe Use of Lasers in the Health Care Facility, Joint Commission scoring guidelines, FDA, OSHA, CDRH, State and AORN requirements in assuring safe , frequent use of surgical laser systems. The seminar will incorporate a variety of teaching methods.

The Colorado Nurses Association approves this continuing education activity. The American Nurse's Association Board on Accreditation accredits CNA as an approver of Continuing Education for nursing. This activity has been approved for eight Continuing Education Credits.

Objectives

At the conclusion of the seminar, participants will be able to:

  1. Discuss and/or describe the unique qualities of medical laser wavelengths
  2. Describe the unique manner in which laser energy selectively cuts, coagulates, and removes biological tissue
  3. Discuss the specific laser precautions that should be implemented for a standard surgical procedure
  4. Describe how lasers are used in various surgical disciplines
  5. Define the peri-operative responsibilities of the O.R. nurse in the use of lasers
  6. Develop policy and procedures for your facility
  7. Identify the need for an Incident and Accident report
  8. Demonstrate appropriate troubleshooting procedures to maintain a safe laser environment
  9. Select appropriate eyewear for each laser wavelength and know the OD
  10. Identify environmental protection controls for laser safety
  11. Identify accessory equipment for each laser as appropriate
  12. Choose appropriate protection from the non-target tissue from the laser beam
  13. Differentiate the tissue effects of each wavelength
  14. Develop a protocol for laser fire management
  15. Identify criteria for emergency laser shutdown
  16. Identify the LSO's role
  17. Identify the laser committees duties and objectives

Hands -on Session

During the hands-on session you will:

  1. Review the appropriate laser and be able to identify important safety features
  2. Identify safety eyewear
