Duties and Responsibilities
of the
Medical Laser Officer

Purpose of the Seminar

The two day, action packed course concentrates on an overview of laser applications and systems, including the recent surge in new laser wavelengths used in the health care environment. The program will focus upon the scoring guidelines designated by the ANSI Standard which have been adopted by JCHAO, and how that will effect you as an LSO.  We will review the 1996 ANSI-Z-136.3 Standard, "For the Safe Use of Lasers in the Health Care Facilities", and discuss the not yet in print ANSI-Z-136.4 standard for health care facilities.

In addition the guidelines of FDA/CDRH, OSHA, State and AORN will be discussed relative to those requirements that would administratively affect an LSO in a medical institution, clinic or surgery center regarding laser hazard controls.

Who Should Attend

It is designed specifically for the Medical Laser safety Officer (LSO) or related position with responsibilities for laser safety. This can include nurses, administrators, biomedical and clinical engineers, physicians, and hospital safety personnel.

The ANSI-Z-136.3 Laser Standard states, "The healthcare facility SHALL establish and maintain an adequate program for the control of laser hazards. This SHALL be the responsibility of the Laser Safety Officer."

"CE activity is approved by the Colorado Nurses' Association. CNA is accredited as an approver of CE for nursing by the American Nursed Credentialing Center Commission on Accreditation." This offering has been approved for 16.2 contact hours.
